Advancing accessibility research to build a barrier-free Canada

Supporting inclusive innovation through research

Accessibility Standards Canada’s Advancing Accessibility Standards Research Grants and Contributions Program funds inclusive, high-impact research led by persons with disabilities. It supports research projects that:

  • help identify, remove and prevent barriers
  • inform the development of national accessibility standards
  • contribute to building a more inclusive Canada.

The program is a key driver in achieving the vision of the Accessible Canada Act – to create a barrier-free Canada. It also directly supports Government of Canada initiatives on accessibility and inclusion.

Research that drives results

Since its launch in 2019, the program has built a strong, diverse, and growing research network that is transforming how accessibility is understood and addressed:

  • 90+ inclusive research projects funded
  • 30,000 participants engaged
    • 60% identify as persons with disabilities
    • 85%+ identify as members of equity-deserving groups
  • $13 million in additional in-kind contributions from partners
  • Knowledge generated through funded research is shared with diverse audiences nationally and internationally to advance understanding, guide standards development, and foster real-world solutions to accessibility barriers.

Supporting standards development

The research funded through this program is foundational to the creation and evolution of national accessibility standards. It supports:

  • The Board of Directors in setting priorities for standards development
  • The development of technical and research documents used by standards committees
  • Experts working on the design and drafting of standards

This work feeds directly into the creation of equity-based, inclusive standards that respond to real barriers experienced by Canadians.

A high-impact, inclusive network

The program powers a dynamic network of collaborators, partners, and organizations – all working together to advance accessibility:

  • 250 collaborators, majority persons with disabilities
  • 150 partners, also majority persons with disabilities
  • Shared knowledge with over 15 national and 75+ international standards development organizations
  • All findings are made available for free in various formats

This inclusive research ecosystem informs not only domestic standards but also global conversations on accessibility.

Turning research into meaningful change

Research funded through the Grants and Contributions Program is helping to:

  • Shape emerging accessibility standards and best practices
  • Advance inclusive approaches across key public and private sectors such as employment, emergency services, technology, and the built environment
  • Strengthen evidence-based decision making through improved accessibility data and tools
  • Promote innovation and equity in how services, spaces, and technologies are designed and delivered
  • Enhance public awareness and inform accessibility conversations at national and international forums

By introducing innovative approaches to creating equity-based standards that promote inclusion and accessibility for all, Accessibility Standards Canada is demonstrating Canada’s global leadership and helping to drive a culture shift within the standards development world.
