Areas of focus

There are common areas where persons with disabilities may face barriers related to accessibility in communication. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Events or situations where participants who communicate through sign language, those who are deaf or hard of hearing, or those who are blind or partially sighted cannot receive communication in a format (for example, alternative communication) that allows them to meaningfully participate.
  • Interactive devices, such as touchscreens, that do not provide options to request assistance or communication through alternate methods.
  • Key information that is provided only through one form of communication (such as intercom audio announcements) and not through other communication mediums (for example through text, video, etc.).
  • In-person instructions that are only provided verbally and without other forms of communication (for example through sign language, text, or video).
  • A lack of communication supports without advance notice or booking.
  • The inability for support persons to accompany individuals into certain spaces and provide communication support.
